Why I Love being a Freelancer—Graphic Designer

I’m now 2 years into freelancing full-time as a graphic designer. In the past, I’ve had graphic design jobs on project basis while doing University, so it just made sense for me to continue to do so after graduation. It has been extremely interesting and I highly recommend it. Maybe I’m just addicted to part-time jobs, maybe I just can’t focus on one thing, but here’s a post dedicated to why being a freelancer is the BEST (for me).

01 Own-Time, Own-Target ⏰
I just love that I work based on deadlines and not hours. I don’t have to pretend and sit at an office desk just because it’s office hours. I also love working on weekends and chilling on weekdays because I love deconstructing social norms (and town isn’t crowded on weekdays).

02 Work Anywhere ✈️
You want to go to (insert country) now? alright, let’s do it—I love being able to say that. This was something I really embraced this year after ending my rental lease. Just this year alone, I went to London, Spain, KL, Bali, KL again and now I’m heading to Korea this week. I work while I travel because I do love what I do and all I need is my laptop. It’s also a plus as I’m constantly inspired by the places I visit and new experiences. The world is beautiful.

03 Endless Job Possibilities 🐚
The world is huge—we already know that. But that also means that there are so many different job opportunities out there. I love being able to say yes to opportunities because I have the freedom and time for it. This also expands my portfolio and I get to experience so many different things in 1 life time. I constantly apply random freelance/part-time roles for fun to see what possibilities it might bring. I’m always meeting new teams and working with different brands. It’s so fun to see behind the scenes of different companies.

04 Stackable Income 💰
Yes, we all know freelancers don’t have a stable income. But something that is not stable also means it could skyrocket in some months. That’s the fun part! I’m always looking for new opportunities to increase my income because I’m not fixed to anything—there is no CAP.

05 Everyday is Different 🌞
Now I wake up every day to a different day. Is today a work-on-computer day? Is today going to be a meeting day? Or a shoot day? Where do I want to work today? I just love that everyday is NOT THE SAME. I also love getting surprised by the universe with possibilities. This was my one wish when I was a kid—to be an adult and not wake up to do the same thing everyday, I’m so glad I made the inner child in my dream.

Freelancing is a great challenge because it’s client servicing, creative work and project management all lumped together. You’re basically a business owner but with 1 employee. For someone who is easily bored, this would be perfect.
